Bringing Outdoor Adventure into the Classroom

PEMBROKE: Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley continues to carve a niche in outdoor adventure programming.

After four highly successful years delivering its two year Outdoor Adventure Diploma program, the college is increasing its enrolment to meet the demand. Beginning in the fall of 2004, the college will accept 84 students, doubling the number of students it took in two years ago. As part of a gradual increase, the college enrolled 60 students last year.

The Adventure program attracts students from across Canada and provides them with both business and practical skills education. Not only do students study topics such as finance, accounting, risk management and business planning, they also earn as many as 22 industry recognized certifications in disciplines like white water rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, ice climbing, snowboarding and skiing.

The college also offers a one year Adventure Naturalist Diploma program, that focuses on nature interpretation, soft adventure skills and business.

Planned for 2005, is an Adventure Therapy program and potentially a Golf Course and Ski Resort Management program. Graduates of these programs will continue to help support the adventure tourism sectors here in the Ottawa Valley and around the world.
