Geocaching - GPS Treasure Hunting in the Ottawa Valley

The Ottawa Valley has partnered with Geocaching Ontario (a non-profit entity) a four-season outdoors activity using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Over 15 new cache sites will be planted throughout the scenic Ottawa Valley region by March 2006. GPS treasure hunting promotes the wise use of trails and the technology leaves “no ecological footprint.” Whether hiking, biking, bird watching, fishing, snowmobiling or in your car, you potentially could be using a GPS unit and be looking for the hidden caches. Caches contain natural and unique cultural heritage stories and promote community visitation through its tagline – “Search, See, Learn and Stay Awhile.” Visit a meteor crater site and viewing tower, 100 meter canyon, see a floating island and more. At the same time participants’ recover a code word at the cache which they submit on the website – www.geocachingontario.com for “chances to win thousands of dollars worth of prizes using the online submission form. Participants look under the live caches tab and All locations, GPS coordinates and clues are given to “would be treasure hunters.” Bring your own GPS or we can lend you one and help you prepare a story on this up and coming new recreational trend for families and individuals. Hey, you might even win a prize while you are at it.
