That’s "Welcome to Wilno", in the dialect still spoken by local descendants of the Kashubian Poles, who settled these beautiful rocky hills in the early 1800s. Still home to farmers and loggers, Canada’s oldest Polish settlement is also a thriving centre for artisans. Along the hillsides are clusters of charming galleries, shops and studios displaying the fine art and folk crafts created in and around the Village. For a dash of local hospitality, drop into the Wilno Tavern for traditional Polish fare, folklore and music. Wilno Weekends celebrate the beauty of each season but the Village has special appeal all year ‘round. May 1 is Polish Day: a celebration of music, dance, and culture, topped with a feast of Kashubian cuisine. Fenced with stones, stumps and rails in the old style. Walk the path of the pioneer Kashub settlers. Stop at the crosses erected in the old polish tradition. Visit the log cabin “Heritage Centre” for historical displays, antiques, artifacts, resource books and souvenirs. For more information visit www.wilno.com.
