Calabogie Peaks is looking for Package Partners

Matt Cuccaro at Calabogie Peaks is seeking contact information for providers of spring/summer/fall activities for their guests at the accommodation units at the Peaks.

They would sell activities to their clients, schedule the activity provider and work out a revenue sharing arrangement.

They do offer their own waterfront activities- canoes and kayaks, beach and they rent mountain bikes.  They do not provide guide or instructional services.

Examples of what they would like to offer their guests;  hiking tours, canoe excursions, nature walks with interpretation, sailing, ATV tours, bike tours, mountain biking tours, waterskiing/wakeboarding, jet ski rides/tours, GPS/Geocaching instruction/guiding, etc.

If an OVTA member would like to investigate this opportunity contact Matt at: tel  613-752-2720 ext 1516.

MNR -  Coordinated lake trout strategy

Lake Trout Lake protection policy; the focus is protecting lake trout lakes from unsustainable shoreline development and nutrient inputs. Policy to protect other important cold water fisheries such as: whitefish, smelt, brook trout, splake, brown trout, rainbow trout, and various salmon is still lacking. These coldwater fish species also require clean, coldwater with oxygen levels similar to that required by lake trout. Many non-Lake Trout coldwater lakes in Renfrew County are being degraded by nutrient inputs from shoreline development, these important coldwater fisheries are at risk of being lost due to declining water quality. Renfrew County is experiencing a boom of shoreline development, this development could be done in a more environmentally fashion so as to preserve our fisheries habitat and lake water quality.

Long term land values around our coldwater lakes could also be in jeopardy if water quality becomes poor or shorelines become ugly from too much development/use. Local planning authorities (County and Municipalities) overseeing development of shoreline areas need to know that the protection of coldwater fish habitats and lake water quality is important to the public and necessary for sustainable economic growth so they will feel obligated to add protective measures to their Official Plans. If you get the chance to comment on the development of your local Official Plan this is a good thing to support or ask for to protect your coldwater lakes. Subject: Proposal for a dissolved oxygen criterion for the protection of lake trout habitat. On October 13th, 2005, Minister Ramsay announced the development of a co-ordinated strategy to protect lake trout lakes in Ontario. An Information Notice about the proposed strategy was posted on the Environmental Bill of Rights (EBR) Registry. As part of the co-ordinated lake trout strategy, MNR is proposing a uniform standard dissolved oxygen criterion to determine development capacity on lake trout lakes for use by MNR field staff and municipalities. The criterion was developed by Dr. David Evans of ARDS and will help ensure that water quality for lake trout will be protected. The Ministry is posting a Proposal Notice for the dissolved oxygen criterion on the EBR Registry for a 45 day public comment period. Written submissions may be made between January 17th, 2006 and March 3rd, 2006. The proposed criterion will apply to lakes that are currently identified by the MNR as being managed for lake trout. A web-link to a comprehensive list of lake trout lakes is included with the Proposal Notice.

To view the Proposal Notice, visit: www.ene.gov.on.ca/samples/search/Ebrquery_REG.htm , and enter Registry Number PB06E6807.

Once the approval process is complete and a Decision Notice posted, Fisheries Section will follow-up with direction to the field and technical guidelines. I’d like to thank the many MNR staff who have contributed to this exercise to-date, particularly Field Services staff who spent considerable effort to verify the list of lakes managed for lake trout. As I outlined in my memo of October 14th, 2005, Fisheries Section is continuing to work on the other components of the lake trout strategy announced by the Minister.  Specifically, we are working with Land Management Section, Renewable Energy Section, and other groups within MNR to consolidate land management policies for Crown lands adjacent to lake trout lakes, and subsequently amend the relevant area-specific land use policies in the Crown Land Use Policy Atlas.  We are also completing the regulatory proposals for the management of the lake trout sport fishery (tool kit).  We anticipate consulting on these components later this winter.
